Shikaras on Dal Lake
Driving to and fro in Srinagar, the Dal Lake seems to be your constant companion at the side of the road. This huge lake with its fountains was a joy to our children. And when we decided to take a ride on a Shikara, the colourful boats on Dal Lake, everyone was most happy. The Shikaras themselves are little pieces of art, with coloured woodcraft, pretty cushions and curtains. They have a roof which must be most welcome in summertime.
Enjoying the view…
Our boat had a little kids’ size rudder that our children used with delight. With usually one man rowing in the back you have a beautiful view over the lake. Behind the lake looms the majestic mountain range of the Kashmir valley. This scenery is a good fit for a couple outing or even a proposal!
Other Shikaras pass bye hastily. These are family Shikaras with fathers picking up children after school, returning to the house boat colony on the lake.
Time for tea or: shopping on the lake!
Some Shikaras come closer, their owners gesticulating, offering drinks or snacks, souvenirs or jewellery. Therefore we tasted the famous kahwa tea, a herbal tea with cinnamon and other spices. I have to admit I am not too much into teas, but this tea was definitely tasty.
A quick visit to a houseboat
After having rejected a few offers to buy souvenirs, we reached another part of the lake where houseboats are rented out as accommodation for tourists. We even had the opportunity to see one from inside. (In this relationship oriented culture you always know someone who knows someone…) So our Shikara was tied to a houseboat, we took off our shoes, and had a look inside. We were amazed at the size and furnishings of this houseboat! Just that in this early Spring our feet were getting a little cold, so we returned to our Shikara and enjoyed the rest of the ride on the Dal Lake with the sun gently shining down on us. It was a really worthwhile and enjoyable outing!
